1975 M23 Part 3

Clear was polished and buffed out before the body was glued together using both 5 minute epoxy and CA in a few places.

The engine had to be glued in place at the same time making this a tricky step but everything turned out looking pretty good.

I had to repaint the rear wing after a problem with my masking pulled off part of the white paint. I'll shoot that with clear and finish up the kit this week before turning my attention back to the Eagle.

Progress has been made on the late season F60 as well and I should be able to finish that within the next few weeks as well. Its nice to see some progress on the builds again!

I used PPG clear on this kit and it turned out great.

After a light wetsanding the decals were put on.

There are several major issues with these old and somewhat lower quality decals.

You can see how the drivers right decals have wrinkled up and I'm going to pull that layer off with some tape and see how it looks.

Good progress made so far. Plastic added to the front nose and lots of putty to even out the nose cone.
Vents cut out on the front half of the nose cone were a bit of a pain to do but not as bad as trying to build up the body around the driver. Not sure how I'm going to do the engine yet as I continue to hunt for a 1/12 built Matra kit. I just hate the idea of buying a new Matra kit to just pick the engine out! More putty work to do around the driver as well as some body work around the engine. I'm also not sure on the color of blue so if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Brass was used to create the lower cowling around the rear suspension.

I'm going to build this curb side because of the modifications.

Next will be the newly created cameras on the nosecone.

This is going to include new exhaust outlets, Modified front and rear wings, and modified cameras on the front nose. The trick for the quick turn around is the Tamiya Light Cured Putty...I love this stuff.

Other than the modified parts it will be built with no extra details.

Carbon Fiber will be sprayed on using mesh and I'll use the kit seatbelt kit.

I was looking for this kit for a while now and found it for dirt cheap at a local store in town.

The kit was built with only minor additions as another build to just complete and improve my out of box building.

The kit is a standard Tamiya kit with nice details considering how old the original kit came out and the updated decals by Cartograph provide a very nice out of box kit.

The big test on this kit was to use lead foil for the belts and the result was very impressive.

Its easy to form and much better to work with over ribbon or cloth.

Its 98% complete with only mirrors and a few minor details to finish it off.

There is much debate over the color of this car because in the pictures you will find from race to race it seems to look different in each picture depending on the light and angle.

I chose to use a metallic silver base followed by a mix of Tamiya Mica Red and Italian Red.

I'm pleased with the color and after the clearcoat the color should pop even more.

Overall a good kit with a few minor fit issues and some questionable details if you're looking for a specific race to represent (it looks to be modeled after the launch). But with a little putty and some new panel lines it's a great addition to the shelf. Clearcoat will go on this weekend with decals and final assembly by Monday.

Tamiya Light Putty was used and this stuff is amazing!

I can apply putty within minutes of each layer. I'm going to create a video using it to show how hard it gets in a matter of minutes. It is also the smoothest putty I have used.

Every bolt head was removed, drilled out and replaced with a new either metal or plastic bolt head. Insect pins were used in some areas as well. The photoetched detail set is nice and a great value for the price.

It's been a while since I have updated the site.

Life got in the way of the hobby and multiple issues on a few of the builds of slowed down progress. I have also been building some aircraft kits that I'll post here as well.

The Williams is almost complete, I'm still working on the lighting for the display.

This Cobra kit was one that had slowed down because of paint problems.

The Tamiya paint I shot over Dupont 2 Part Clear started to wrinkle and eat away at the clear.

After about 4 weeks in the brake fluid it was sanded, primed and shot with Tamiya Metallic Blue. Tamiya clear was used and polished out.

Doors will be attached and the trunk created out of brass.

I have finally been able to get some more done on the Williams.

Driver figure was primed and painted with flat white acrylics.
This was followed by some dark grey to bring out the shadow areas.
White was again drybrushed over the entire figure and left to dry.

The front suspension was masked and painted blue and black and after a day glued to the body using epoxy. The angle was set to show the car going over a curb on the left side of the car.
I didnt apply the CF decals yet because I didnt want them to crack if I need to change the angle of the suspension again.

The rear wing was taped and CF templates made, primed, painted dark blue and CF decals applied.
There are a few areas that you can see in the picture that didnt get covered but they are fixed now and I'm pleased with how it turned out.

Started out by using some Tamiya tape to trace the white decals.
These were placed on a piece of glass and cut out, the correct decal number is written on each masking piece.
Tamiya TS-55 was shot from a warmed can in light coats to build up and prevent as much getting under the tape
A final heavy coat was put on after an hour of letting the light coats dry.
Tape was removed and the blue to white transition was wet sanded with 2000 grit 3M paper.
Decals were applied and some had to be modified to represent the markings for the Singapore GP.
CF was applied to the undertray and gearbox
After 30 minutes in the dehydrator Tamiya Smoke was airbrushed over the CF to give it a darker look.

I also burn a hole in the front wing trying to solder the wing together.
It was very odd as soon as the iron touched the area the part just melted.
Not sure why it melted but I'll be fixing that tonight.

Finishers Foundation White was put on after several coats of Mr White Surfacer.
The Foundation White was wet sanded and 5-7 light coats of Tamiya Pure White were sprayed on from the can.
I am making masks from Tamiya tape and will be painting the dark blue on today.

I need to add a few PE parts and the mirrors and the kit is done.

I mounted the rear wing to the floorboard using the pin and shot all of it with clear together to add some extra support to the gearbox and wing section.

I'm very pleased with the result of the rear wing fix and glad to be done with this build!

This is just a testfit to make sure the seat and everything still fits together.
I'll use Studio 27 seatbelts but the kit came with the wrong color belts, not a major issue but something to watch if you build the kit.

Gloss aluminum was used for the silver winglets.
All CF applied to the various parts.

It's so cold I dont want to clear the car so I will get all of the other winglets on the car before the clear. This will make polishing risky but not impossible.

I got my new lathe yesterday and it's amazing how easy it is to make parts right out of the box! We'll see if it makes me a better builder!

I will clear the body after it warms up a little and everything can be put together.
The CF is a mix of Studio 27 / Modelers / SMS / Slixx.
CF was airbrushed with Testors Metalizer sealer to give it a dull look.

The Red Bull is almost complete!
Not a bad start to the year (even though I did start the kit at the end of last year).
I am very pleased with the color of blue and ended up using the decals for the yellow. They did a very nice job of covering the glue and had very few issues getting them on.

I will finish covering various parts with CF and will do final assembly.

The seat was made by painting it with thick primer and while it was still wet I dusted it with embossing powder.
After everything was dry I airbrushed Tamiya Desert Yellow.

I used extra photo etched parts to make the buckles used to hold the electronic components.

The straps are made from some material I found on Ebay that is used for seat belts. Very nice material that is a mix between paper and cloth.

This shows where I made the cut to correct the wrong angle of the wing.

Here is the best look to show where the correction is made up.
You can just see that the rear part of the gearbox is pointing towards the right front of the car. The Brass pin used is holding the weight of the wing so I'm pleased with the results.

Here is the body painted with Zero Paints and 2 part clear.
The side pods are covered in Modelers CF and will get a clear yellow finish over them.

All of the parts are painted and I am ready to do the final assembly of all the parts.

I'm going to hold off on the decals and purchase the correct tobacco markings, plus the kit decals are very thin and you can see through the white while it's still on the sheet!

I had traced each piece of the suspension before I glued them together so i could make the CF templates.
Studio 27 CF decals used on the large section of the suspension and Modelers CF on the rest.
The Gold Decals are Model Factory Hiro leftovers from another kit.

After I clear these parts Bare Metal Foil will be added to the various suspension parts.

I meant to post this on the first Red Bull Post but forgot.

When I start a new multimedia kit I always check to make sure all the parts are there.
This after a few kits that were missing parts or came with the wrong kit version parts bag.

I use 3 x 5 cards and mark in the top right corner the step in the instructions the card represents and use tape to tape the parts, marking the part number under the part.

This organization has helped me and thought I'd pass it on!

A big thanks to Spike for the Red Bull decals for the kit.
My wife got me the kit as a gift and didnt know the decals were not included.
By the time I went back to get the decals, they were all gone.
I contacted Spike after seeing this STR kit came with the RB4 decals and he sent them to me free of charge. Again, big thanks to Spike and I'm a part of the "Pay it Forward" club and will be looking to do the same for someone down the road.

After watching an excellent build on the the F1m site by BigDuke6 I decided to give this challenging kit a shot.

I started by removing the rear wing support, if left as is it will make the wing sit angled and a noticeable gap on one side by the rear tire.
(disappointing for the price of the kit!)

I used a piece of solder after cutting and shaping the piece

If you build the kit you need to make sure these suspension pieces are worked and reworked to be as straight as possible.

The front wing was tacked together with CA glue and solderd and filed clean to make sure the parts were not going to come apart later in the building process.

Back to the rear suspension...all parts are assembled to test the fit and shape of all the parts. These are the most brittle pieces of white metal I have ever seen! Because of this I have only 1 shot with each suspension arm. This entire section was glued and will be painted black before the CF decals are put on. We'll see how it turns out. (Thanks to Manu for this tip!)

The front wing was painted with auto primer, cleaned and primed again with black auto primer.

After a few hours TS-51 (Telefonica Blue) was shot from the can in very thin layers every 15 minutes. A total of 5 layers built up to this.

The pictures really dont do justice to how close this match is to the RB4 color. This will be left to dry before the CF and other decals are put on.

When I purchased this kit I put it away for a while as I finished some of my other in progress kits. When I did finally open it I found that the kit was not molded correctly and was missing the left front section of the nose. Because of the cost to get a replacement body I decided to modify the kit and create the car driven by Mario Andretti at Monza.
I have placed an order for Tamiya Polyester Putty and will finish the kit after I get that.

As you build it, you find more detail that is molded into the kit.

I need to paint the body to include the body parts that need to be added before the final suspension.

Tomorrow I'll start the prep work to get all body parts painted with Zero Ferrari Red.

I didnt notice a few areas on the Bare Metal Foil that need more work.
Gotta love macro shots that make your mistakes stick out!

Pre-Build
All multimedia kits require several test fitting of parts and many times reshaping the metal parts that are stuffed in a bag and bent out of shape. Prior to this test fit all parts are sanded and washed. Resin parts are scrubbed with a toothbrush and aircraft remover is used to clean any residue from all resin parts.
This kit wasn’t that bad and required only two test fits to set the ride height and shape the metal parts. The test fit is done using small amounts of CA glue to hold all of the parts in place. It is during this test fit, that parts that can be assembled are glued with either CA glue or 2 part epoxy.

The kit is disassembled and all holes are drilled out slightly larger than needed to account for the buildup of paint that will occur throughout the building process.
The Build
Parts are primed using automotive sandable primer and additional cleanup of the parts including filling holes with putty , removing mold lines and shaping of parts is completed. This kit was very straightforward and required very little work to get the body ready for painting.
Parts such as the suspension and undertray were primed, cleaned, and painted with Krylon semi flat black paint before receiving SMS Carbon Fiber decals. Templates for each part were made from Tamiya masking tape to ensure the best fitting , and least amount of wasted decals. Solvaset and Mr Mark Softener were used to get the decals to conform to the many curves on the parts and after 3 days a clearcoat (Testors Metalizer Sealer) was airbrushed over the decals.
The body was primed and painted gloss black as a base for the chrome paint. The chrome was airbrushed on and allowed to dry for 7 days to ensure it didn’t rub off. This particular paint came with its own clear that had to be applied so the finish wouldn’t become dull. The paint was buffed out and the decals were applied.

The florescent orange decals on this kit were extremely brittle and I had a few problems with the decals on the side cracking because of the shape. If I had to do it again I would use the decals as a template to create a mask and paint the orange on…oh well maybe on the MP4/23!
The orange was painted using a new paint for me, Spaz Stix Florescent Orange. All decals were applied with no major issues and I decided not to do a final clear coat to prevent the chrome from becoming dull.
Conclusion
After you’ve built a few of these Studio 27 kits you get the hang of them. They all pretty much have the same fit issues and require the same amount of work to get a decent looking kit. While not 100% accurate most of the time they do make a nice addition to any collection.
